We didn’t kick them out, they fled: on the “Argentinization” of YPF and the limits of the Kirchnerist oil policies

By Fernando Dachevsky and Betania Farfaro
Translation: Leonardo Kosloff

The government boasts about having stimulated the “Argentinization” of YPF. However, behind this show of patriotism there is hidden the fact that the oil industry in Argentina is less and less viable. The Spanish of Repsol sell their stocks and leak out their capital, while the government not only pampers to it, but allows it to increase its prices.

"Obama, like Bush, is not interested in legalization for immigrants", interview to Immanuel Ness

Obama, like Bush, is not interested in legalization for immigrants

(Traducido por Leonardo Kosloff)
This interview to Immanuel Ness, who teaches at Brooklyn college, was done for the organization Razon y Revolucion in Argentina. You can see the Spanish version here

Q: In what sectors are the immigrant workers mainly inserted and what are their working conditions?
We must differentiate immigrant workers from migrant workers. Immigrant workers constitute all those who seek to stay in the United States, migrants, include those who are temporary workers, or who have overstayed their visas, usually for work purposes. Migrant workers are employed in all labor markets in the US economy. However, the vast majority of migrant workers in the US who have arrived since the 1986 Immigration Law, are living and working in the US without documentation status. As a consequence, their wages are significantly lower, and it is more difficult to monitor safety in their workplaces. In the 1980s, migrant workers have entered an array of industries, from meatpacking and processing to domestic labor. Workers are employed under significantly lower wages than their predecessors in virtually every industry.  As a whole migrant worker wages or lower, even those who arrive as temporary laborers in the information technology and hospitality sectors. More evidence shows they displace US-born workers who had higher wages, fewer hours, and safer working conditions.

The theory of monopoly capital and the supposed end of competition

The theory of monopoly capital and the supposed end of competition

Juan Kornblihtt

Traducción de Leonardo Kosloff

It’s almost commonplace to lay blame on the big monopolies of being the cause of the evils provoked by capitalism. In this article, we will discuss this idea. Not because the capitals with the highest concentration deserve any defense, but because the idea that their power resides in their monopolistic character leads to confusions regarding the functioning of capitalism, and, in large measure, how to combat it. The North-American economist Paul Sweezy is one of the most influencing intellectuals in Marxism and the one who gave theoretical justification to the idea that the domination of monopoly capital replaced competition [1]. His theories are present in a large number of traditional parties of the left in all their variants, from Maoists to Trotskyists. The debate could seem minor and be reduced to subtleties. Nevertheless, what is being hidden behind attributing the handling of the economy to the monopolies is the absolute transformation of Marx’s theory: the end of competition between capitals implies, in the last instance, to forget the theory of value. A position which is against the data afforded by reality: permanent increase in the productivity of companies to win markets, the disputes through price lowering for different products, the persistence of various companies including in those branches with the highest concentration, and the historical tendency of the falling rate of profit.

North Africa at the epicenter of world crisis

Argentine economy

traducido por Leonardo Kosloff

By Juan Kornblihtt and Bruno Magro

The eruption in North African countries is the expression that the global crisis has entered its State phase, reaching the structural functions of the state form. Although the scale of the social conflict is greater than those seen before in other countries due to the political conditions in the region, we face the same phenomena that were experienced in the general strikes in Greece, the demonstrations of English students, and recent demonstrations against adjustments in Wisconsin (U.S.). Many saw in the capacity of state intervention a quick exit to the problems of capital. But this same intervention is the one which gives the current phase of the crisis its particular character, which changed from a bounded sector to the whole of social relations. As we have pointed out in previous editions, it has a magnitude and quality of historic character. Hence, the unleashed conflicts have not reached a democratic or liberal resolution, and neither a nationalistic one.
